Soft feathery green leaves, grows to about 5ft (1.5m) high when flowering. The lovely aniseed scent and flavour makes it a good herb to use with fish dishes, use leaves and seeds. HP £1.90

Heartseaes Heartsease Viola tricolour
This lovely wildflower likes any soil, and thrives in partial shade or full sun. It has bright yellow, white and purple flowers from spring to autumn. Horseradish has large oblong leaves that can be used in salads to add spice. Use the root to make your own horseradish sauce to accompany roast beef as well as beetroot dishes. Houseleek Houseleeks Sempervivum tectorum
Forms clusters of rosettes that are variable in appearance from grey-green with purple tips to deep red. Also known as the healing leaf and thunder plant (it was grown on the roofs of houses in Roman times and the Middle ages to protect them from lighting). This herb has no culinary uses but is useful to have around the garden because the leaves can be broken in half and used to treat nettle stings and insect bites. 2ins (5cm) HP. £1.50
